What is an Essay?

1. A piece of writing that dicusses a topic, expresses an opinion, and gives reasons for your opinion.
2. A piece of writing that is adressed to somebody which starts with Dear or hello.
3. A piece of writing in which a fictional story is told.
4. A piece of writing that gives an opinion about a movie or a book,

Phases of Essay Writing

Inventing = Decide what you want to write about and create an essay outline

Drafting = Writing of your Essay

Editing = Correcting and improving your work

What is a Thesis Statement?

A Thesis Statement should let your learners know what the essay is about. This will help you guide your writing and focus your arguments. 

In this essay, I am going to tell you my opinion on euthanasia 

.... and your opinion is? 

Fatally ill people should be given the chance to legally 

end their lives.

Outline example

Thesis sentence: Fatally ill people should be given the chance to legally end their lives. 

Paragraph 1: Death is better than endless suffering

Paragraph 2: It's their body = they can decide for themselves

Paragraph 3: Euthanasia is safer.
