Funny as the man himself appears to be have been quite partial to the Old world. Went to England where he met Sir Walter Scott who encouraged his writing.

  • Born in New York 1783
  • The last of 11 children
  • Sent to Tarrytown during an outbreak of yellow fever in 1798 (15 years old)
  • No college education

  • Fell in love with and married Matilda Hoffman
  • Published his first satirical essays in 1802
  • In 1806 he became a lawyer
  •  In 1809 Matilda died.
