What do we use the Present Continuous for?

The Present Continuous is used to show that an action is happening:
  • Now
  • Often
  • May continue in the future

What is the Present Continuous?

The Present Continuous always uses:
  • 2 verbs in the present tense (what is a tense?)   
  • A form of to be in the present tense (am, is, are)
  • A second verb that always ends in -ing
Example:
The hairdresser is cutting my hair in the library

The verb to be can change in the Present Continuous

The hairdresser is cutting my hair in the library

The hairdressers .............. cutting my hair in the library.

I ................. cutting the hairdresser's hair in the library.

How come that to be changes in these examples?

What is the Present Continuous in the negative?

The Present Continuous in the negative always uses:
  • a form of not
  • 2 verbs in the Present Tense
  • A form of to be in the Present Tense (am, is are)
  • A second verb in the present tense that always ends in -ing

Example:
The hairdresser is not/isn't cutting my hair in the library.

The Present Continuous in the question always uses:

  • A form of to be in the Present Tense (am, is are)
