Past Simple

Lesson target:

At the end of this lesson you fully understand how to use and when to use the Past Simple .

Past simple general rule

Past simple = 

Subject + hele werkwoord + -ed

I worked all day.

He walked to the supermarket.

Je gebruikt voor alle personen dezelfde vorm. 

Er is dus geen onderscheidt tussen I, he, she, it, we, you, they. 

Try it out!

Only write down the correct form of the verb. Do not write down the whole sentence.

Fill in the correct form of the Past simple:
Yesterday I .... (to wash) my car.

Fill in the correct form of the Past simple:
I .... (to search)for a gift last week.

Fill in the correct form of the Past simple, geen verkortevorm gebruiken:
He .... (to stop) the car.

Fill in the correct form of the Past simple, geen verkortevorm gebruiken:
They .... (to use) that bag last month.

Past simple negatives

Bij ontkenningen:

Subject + did / didn't + hele werkwoord. 

I didn't work all day. 
He didn't walk to the supermarket.

Je gebruikt dus niet de past simple vorm van het werkwoord, maar het'gewone', hele werkwoord. 

Past simple questions

Bij vragen:

did / didn't + Subject +  hele werkwoord. 

Did I work all day?
Didn't he walk to the supermarket?

Je gebruikt dus niet de past simple vorm van het werkwoord, maar het'gewone', hele werkwoord. 

Fill in the correct form of the Past simple, geen verkortevorm gebruiken:
I .... (not/to be) not late.

Fill in the correct form of the Past simple, geen verkortevorm gebruiken:
The train .... (not go) very fast.

To be = was / were

Als er gevraagd wordt om een vorm van to be te gebruiken in combinatie met de past simple gebruiken we was of were

I/ he / she / it  > was

You / we / they > were 

Let op! bij ontkenningen en vragen met to be gebruik je geen did/didn't. Je gebruikt gewoon de past simple vorm van to be. 

I wasn't / was not late. 

Were they angry?

Fill in the correct form of the Past simple:
I .... (to be) cold.

Fill in the correct form of the Past simple:
You .... (to be) tired.

Fill in the correct form of the Past simple:
they .... (to be) hungry.

Fill in the correct form of the Past simple:
It.... (to be) sunny.
