Legends behind 'The man in the moon'
  1. A man who, one Christmas eve, stole cabbages from his neighbour’s garden. He was caught and sent to the moon. There he lives, bearing his load of cabbages for all eternity.
  2. Inuits in Alaska believe the man is the keeper of the souls of men/animals.
3. Malasian legends say an old hunchback is on the moon. He is making a fishing line from the bark with a rat who gnaws through the line and a cat who chases the rat. The legend goes that this little circle has to continue – if the man’s fishing line ever reaches the Earth the Earth will end.
