Militias: armed citizens. 

1795 

Stadhouder Willem V driven away to England.

The patriots proclaim (announce) the birth of the Batavian Republic. 

Changes 

• Universal suffrage for rich men.
  
• Unitary State: one central government where provinces and cities need to listen to. 
• Public education 

French occupation

1806: Kingdom of Holland

1810: part of the French Empire (a vassal state).
