The GERUND

What is it? 

Not a verb but a noun, looks a lot like a verb though

Afgeleid van een ww maar is een zelfstandignw

The Gerund:

verb + ing (looks like the continuous form but it really isn't 

Smoking is prohibited

Why is it important to use a gerund?

Because it really improves your comprehension and mastery of the language

It makes your English better 

you can use a gerund in your essay! -> writing skill!

Look at these gerund uses:

Smoking is prohibited

I look forward to meeting you

I remember stealing his watch

I can't stand hearing  children

Form your own gerund:

This was very difficult!

->because you don't know when to use a gerund

There are 4 reasons for using a gerund properly

1. after prepositions (voorzetsels)

I look forward to seeing you.

After seeing them arguing, I wonder why they are still married

2. After certain verbs:

to hate, to like, to stop, to prefer, to enjoy, to avoid, to
remember, to refuse, to mind, to keep, to spend.

He kept asking for money

I avoid giving him money

I prefer watching movies about serial killers

After certain expressions:

to feel like, it’s no use, it’s worth, there’s
no, be busy, can’t help.

It's worth noticing that everybody is on their phone

I can't help putting my finger inside the foam

There's no denying he is the culprit (the guilty person)

4. As (part of the) object:

Smoking is prohibited.

Killing young infants is not okay.

Being a student of the DVC is hard.

Form a gerund after a certain verb:
