Present simple
 
When something happens regularly in the present. Also used for facts.

I write in my diary every night.
My dad runs the fastest in my family.



Past simple
 
When something happened (and finished) in the past.

We slept at a farm last week.
Jackie called James to break  up with him.

Present continuous




When something is happening right now.

-Alice is walking the dog.
-Listen! Those men are singing very loudly.




Past continuous
When something happened in the past and lasted a longer period. Usually combined with  the past simple.

- My mother was fixing my phone when it started ringing.
- We were driving in our car  when we saw a strange light.
