To look at = kijken naar

relative clauses
there are two kinds of relative clauses:

1) restrictive or defining relative clauses

the man who I met yesterday turned out to be a relative of mine.

2) non-restrictive or non- defining relative clauses
James, who I met only yesterday, is a relative of mine.

  • gives information that is needed to understand the main clause 
  • who / which can be replaced by that 
  • relative pronoun can be left out when it is not the subject of the relative clause  
  • you do not put the clause between commas.

  • the relative pronoun cannot be left out
  • the clause is put between commas

who refers to people : The girl who I am engaged to  is Margaret       
which refers to things: The car which I bought is red.
that refers to people and things: Tha car that I bought is red
when refers to a time; The day when i met you is the happiest day of my life.
where refers to a place: The park where we met is just around the corner.
why refers to a reason: That is the reason why we can go home early today.

whom is used after a preposition

whose  is used to say that something/ someone belongs to something else/ someone

This is the man who we saw stealing something in the bookshop.
This is the man for whom Lisa left her husband.
This is the man whose daughter became a super model.
