The Past Simple

Je gebruikt de Past Simple als je zeker 
weet dat iets in het verleden gebeurd is
en nu afgelopen is.

Ontkenningen - Past Simple
Bij ontkenningen gebruik je did not of didn't + het hele werkwoord.  

Dit is zo bij regelmatige en onregelmatige werkwoorden!
I didn't walk to school
I didn't see him

Vragen - Past Simple
Bij vragen begin je de zin met het woordje did plus daarna het hele werkwoord  

Did you walk to school yesterday?
Did you see him yesterday?

Past Continuous
Je gebruikt de past continuous wanneer iets in het verleden een tijdje duurde. 

De hond was aan het luisteren.

The dog was listening.

Hoe maak je de Past Continuous?

Als je over iets vertelt/schrijft dat in het verleden bezig/aan de gang was.

REGELS:
was/were + ww + -ing

Bevestigend: I was watching TV last night.
They were helping me to prepare dinner.
Ontkennend: Sorry, I wasn't listening.
They weren't playing the guitar.
Vragend: What was he eating?
Were you making your homework                (when I called)?




use -> using (not: useing)
shine -> shining (not: shineing)

Sylvia was using a lot of make-up.
The sun was shining last week.

Als er twee acties in één zin staan.

REGELS:
de langer durende actie: Past Continuous      de korter durende actie: Past Simple

The doorbell rang (kort), while I was doing my homework (lang).

When I was working (lang), the lights suddenly went out (kort).



Twee (of meer) acties volgen elkaar op: Past Simple

Melany stood up, walked to the door and left.

My mother took the car and drove to the supermarket.

Twee (of meer) acties zijn tegelijk aan de gang en duren ongeveer even lang: Past Continuous

Mandy was taking a shower while Tom was tidying up the flat.

happened in the past and is finished.

These word help you to see if something happened in the past
  • yesterday
  • last week
  • ten minutes ago
  • in 2007

Past Simple - Irregular verbs
Some verbs in English are irregular, this means that in the past tense they don't get '-ed' at the end, but have their own form:

To write -> wrote; I wrote her a letter last week
to go -> went; He went to Italy last year
to make -> made: They made a very nice meal two days ago

After a regular verb you put -ed'

I walk -> I walked
He walks -> He walked
They walk -> They walked

Spelling:
1. Y after a consonant --> ied:

  • I carry - I carried

BUT: No change with a y after a vowel:

  • I play - I played

2. Verbs ending in e --> add d:

  • I live - I lived

3. Double de consonant to maintain the short sound:

  • I drop - I dropped
