Grammar past tense

"I finished work at 4 p.m. yesterday afternoon."

"I was working at 4 p.m. yesterday afternoon."

What's the difference?

We ... (talk) English yesterday at 9 o'clock in the morning.

Grammar past tense

"I was working when I suddenly saw a masked man come out of the bank."

The past simple is the main event.

The past continuous is the background ongoing event.

"I ... (hear) a loud noise when I ...(eat) dinner.

The police ... (call) when he ...(walk) in the shop.

Grammar past tense

Use the past simple twice if 2 events happen after eac hother:
"When I got home, I had a cup of coffee."

Use the past continuous twice if 2 equally important events happened at the same time:

"While I was working, my roommate was watching TV."

I was driving the car and he was singing along to songs.
