Introduction to
Electricity

This lesson:
Working with a Simulation

Slide 1 - Diapositive

Learning goals
  1. Explore the simulation and find out how it works.
  2. Describe what protons and electrons are.
  3. Explain what charge is.
  4. Explain what effect similar and opposite charges have on eachother.

Slide 2 - Diapositive

Before you start the questions
1. You are set up in a group through zoom.
2. One person shares their screen with the simulation open (the link is on the next slide).
3. The rest of you have the lessonup open to read the questions.
4. Everyone writes down your answers in a word document (The person sharing the screen writes them down on paper).

Question 1
To start, take a look at the simulation. Don't do anything in it yet. Discuss:
  1. What actions do you think you can take in the simulation?
  2. What effects do you think this will have?

Write down your predictions.

Slide 5 - Diapositive

Question 2
Explore the simulation. Give a complete and clear description of what you learned about it by doing so.

Slide 6 - Diapositive

Question 3
Reset the simulation
a) Click the option 'show no charges' in the bottom left corner. Rub the balloon over the sweater. What effect does this have on the balloon and the sweater?

b) Explore the simulation, find an explanation for this phenomenon. Write down your explanation.

Slide 7 - Diapositive

Question 4
The blue minuses represent electrons.
The red pluses represent protons.

Use your books and the internet to find out what electrons and protons are. Write down your findings.

Slide 8 - Diapositive

Question 5
When an object has more protons than electrons it gets a positive charge. When an object has more electrons than protons it gets a negative charge.

Set the simulation to the mode with two balloons. Find out what effect:
a)  Two objects with the same charge have on each other.
b)  Two objects with an opposite charge have on each other.

Write down your findings.

Slide 9 - Diapositive

Question 6
This question is similar to question 3 — Reset the simulation.
a) Rub the balloon over the sweater. Explain what happens in terms of protons, electrons and charge.

Slide 10 - Diapositive

Question 7
Compare your predictions about the simulation with how it actually works.
a) Describe what was different than your predicted.
b) Describe what was similar to what you predicted.

Slide 11 - Diapositive

Question 8 — Check learning goals
a) describe what protons and electrons are.

b) Explain what positive and a negative charge are.

c) Explain what effect two object with both positive or both negative charges have on each other.

d) Explain what effect an object with a positive and an object with a negative charge have on eachother.
