 When we talk about things that started in the past and are still happening (or still have an effect today)

Eg I have lived in Venlo since 2014

Present perfect or past simple?

Last week I .... (meet) an old man called Jack, we ....(be) 81 years old. He ...... (live) in this town since he started working. He always ....(work) at the shoe factory. He .....(retire) 20 years ago. He ...... (be) at home ever since.

When talking about a period of time which hasn't finished yet / to indicate you plan to do the activity again in this week (day /month / year....)

 

Example:

It is Friday:

 you have been to the studio twice this week (on Tuesday and Thursday = you might still again tomorrow or on Sunday!

 "I went to the studio twice this week"

 implies you won't be going to the studio anymore. 

Present perfect or past simple?

Dairy of a shopaholic:

I really enjoy travelling by train! Last week I.....(go) to Amsterdam. This week I ....(go) to Roermond. While there I ..... (see) an amazing coat but I ......(not buy) it, so I might go again this week to buy it!

When we talk about things that we did regularly in the past and we don't mention a specific time

We have travelled a lot.

I have visited many countries.

When we mention a date / year - we use the past simple

I went to Hong Kong last year

Present perfect or past simple?

I must ........ (see) Bruce Springsteen in concert at least 15 times! The last time I ..... (saw) him was in Paris last year. Going to concerts runs in the family. My father is a big fan of Lenny Kravitz and ......(be) to at least 5 concerts of every tour. The only time he .....(miss) his streak ....(is) when he .....(break) his leg whilst skiing. As a result he ....(miss) the last leg of Lenny's 2010 tour.
