Direct vs indirect speech

Hoe maak ik de indirecte rede? 

Je kijkt steeds naar de werkwoorden in de zin van de directe rede. Deze zet je vervolgens allemaal steeds één stapje terug in de tijd. 

Je kijkt naar persoonlijke voornaamwoorden. In de indirecte rede verandert 'I' vaak naar 'he/she/it'.

Hoe verander je de werkwoorden?

present simple --> past simple (bijv. work --> worked, do --> did) 

present continuous --> past continuous (bijv. is listening --> was listening)

present perfect --> past perfect (bijv. have seen --> had seen)

! past simple --> past perfect (bijv. worked --> had worked) 

Direct vs indirect speech

They said: 'We don't agree.'   --> They said they didn't agree. 

She said: 'I was in New York last year.' --> She said she had been in New York last year. 

He says: 'I have been fired.' --> He said he had been fired. 

Benjamin said: "I often have a big hamburger."

Hannah said: "They live in Boston."

Tyler said: "Ian doesn't invite girls to his parties."

Jessica said: "I am going to clean the room."

My teacher said: "Rachel has never been to Philadelphia."

Lucy said: "The train didn't arrive on time."

Passives

Use: to emphasize what has happened, instead of who carried out the acction. 

Fill in the correct passive form:
The words ....(explain) by the teacher every week.

Fill in the correct passive form:
The kitchen.....(clean) before the guests arrived.

Turn into a passive sentence:
My little brother hasn't washed the dishes.

The students handed in the reports.
