Direct speech is wanneer je zelf iets verteld.

"I am going to watch a movie."

 

Reported speech is wanneer je iets naverteld. 

"He said he was going to watch a movie."

Pronouns and possessive adjectives can change when using reported speech

Enzo: 'My friends are waiting for me.'

Enzo said that his friends were waiting for him.

Time / place

Time and place also changes

this evening/today = that evening/day

tomorrow/next week = the next day/the following week.

yesterday/last Sunday = the previous day/Sunday

here = there

Jake: I will see you tomorrow.
What word/phrase can be used for tomorrow in reported speech?

Present simple > Past simple

If you use the  present simple in Direct speech, 

it will change into the  past simple. 

Example:

Amir: 'I want a sandwich.'  <-----direct speech     (present simple)

Amir said (that) he wanted a sandwich. <-----reported speech    (past simple)

Past simple > Past perfect

De past simple  zal in reported speech veranderen in de past perfect.

Voorbeeld:

Petra: 'I saw Nick at the cinema.' <-----direct speech  (past simple)

Petra said (that) she had seen Nick at the cinema. <-----reported speech                                                                                                                                 (past perfect)

I -noticed- a man with a large hat.
Jackie said (that) she ______ a man with a large hat.

3. was noticing
4. had noticed

Present continuous > Past continuous.

The present continuous will change into the past continuous.

Example:

Sofia: 'The TV isn't working.' <-----direct speech (present continuous)

Sofia said (that) the TV wasn't working. <-----reported speech                                                                                                                              (past continuous)

Meri: I -am doing- all I can.
Meri said (that) she ______ all she can.

Present perfect > Past perfect

The present perfect will change into the  Past perfect . (Had +  past participle)

 

Example:

Daniel: 'The plane hasn't landed.' <-----direct speech (present perfect)

Daniel said that the plane hadn't landed. <-----reported speech                                                                                                                                     (past perfect)

Erik: I -have lived- in London for 7 years.
Erik said (that) he ______ in London for 7 years.

2. lived
3. was living
4. had lived

Can > Could

Can changes in could.

Example

Yasmin: 'They can't sing very well.' <-----direct speech (can)

Yasmin told us that they couldn't sing very well. <-----reported speech                                                                                                                                (could)

Will > Would

Will changes into  would.

Voorbeeld:

Oliver: 'I will help with the cooking.' <-----direct speech (will)

Oliver said that he would help with the cooking. <-----reported speech                                                                                                                                 (would)

Change the sentence into Reported speech:
Joey: 'I will finish my homework later.'
