magnifying glass

= vergrootglas

My grandmother uses a magnifying glass to read the fine print. 

fugitive

= voortvluchtige

Three men escaped from the prison and were being sought as fugitives.

to jail

= in de gevangenis zetten

He was jailed for 15 years for stabbing his wife to death.

lawyer

= advocaat 

Following his arrest, he demanded to see his lawyer before making any statement.

Grammar: Passive 

Active: A thief stole my car. 

Passive: My car was stolen by a thief. 

--> In de lijdende vorm gaat het er niet om wie of wat iets doet, maar wat er met iemand of iets gebeurd.

Grammar: Passive

Present simple: am/are/is + voltooid deelwoord

Active : The gardener waters the flowers every evening.

Passive: The flowers are watered by the gardener every evening. 

Grammar: Passive

Past simple: was/were + voltooid deelwoord

Active : She sang a song. 

Passive: A song was sung by her.

Grammar: Passive

Hulpwerkwoorden (will, must, can etc.):

hulpwerkwoord + be + voltooid deelwoord

Answers must be written in pencil.

Competition entrants might be chosen to appear on TV.
