Who

verwijst terug naar een persoon.

vb. Do you know Johnny, who is always building something.

 whom

whom: verwijst naar personen, maar staat direct na een voorzetsel: 

vb: To whom was the letter addressed?

whose

Verwijst naar personen en geeft bezit aan.

vb. The student, whose workbook this is, can pick it up later.

which

verwijst naar dieren of dingen.

This is a picture of his house, which he built himself.

that

Kan in plaats van who of which, als je de de informatie van de bijzin NODIG hebt om de zin te begrijpen (je kunt de bijzin dus niet weglaten.

vb. I don't like people that/ who don't listen

The statement that/ which he gave, surpised me.

Als je de informatie uit de bijzin weg kunt laten,  en er staat dan een komma, dan moet je who of which gebruiken.

vb. The Johnsons, who live across the street, gave a party yesterday.

geen who, which, that

in bijzinnen zonder komma, waarin een ander woord het onderwerp is.

vb: Is your uncle Peter the man I thought so handsome?
