Differences
past simple VS past continuous: 
  • past simple is used for a situation or a one time event in the past, 
  • past continuous is used when something took a while in the past.
Past perfect simple VS past perfect continuous: 
  • Both take place BEFORE another past tense ^
  • Past perfect simple: Situation or one time event which took place before another situation/event in the past.
  • Past perfect continuous: something that took a while in the past before another situation/event in the past.
