Differences
past simple & past continuous: 
past simple is a situation or a once off event in the past, past continuous is something which was happening during a certain time in the past.
Past perfect simple & past perfect continuous: 
Both happen before another past tense
Past perfect simple: situation or once of event before something else in the past 
Past perfect continuous: something which was happening before something else in the past
