Direct and Indirect Speech

Voorbeeld: Harry Potter and the Philisopher's stone -

Direct speech: Als je letterlijk opschrijft wat iemand zegt. 

"..."  (paars)

Indirect speech: als je omschrijft wat iemand heeft gezegd of gedacht. (roze)

Changing tenses

direct speech	indirect speech

present perfect has/have seen	past perfect had seen
past simple saw	past perfect had seen
will will see	would would see

Indirect speech is reporting what was said. So it's always in one of the past tenses.

Changing pronouns.

Who is saying what?

''I like your new shoes, " Sophie told Justin.

Sophie told Justin (that) she liked his new shoes.

Time and place

• Change the time or the  place word.
• So where or when is clear.

''You can see the new puppies here tomorrow,'' said Mr Plum.

Mr Plum said we could see the new puppies there the next day.

Time and place: indirect speech

Direct and Indirect speech

Let op de volgende dingen als je indirect speech gebruikt:

• Gebruik de juiste verleden tijd:

D.S: "I spend a lot of time here."                                Present Simple > Past Simple

ID.S: Terry said that he spent a lot of time there.

                                                                               Present Continuous > Past Continuous

D.S: "We are working on it."                                    

ID.S: We explained that we were working on it.

Direct and Indirect speech

                                                                                      Past Simple > Past Perfect

D.S: "I saw you at the beach yesterday."

ID.S: Steph said that she had seen us at the beach the day before.

 

                                                                                       Present Perfect > Past Perfect

D.S: "Have you ever seen anything strange?"

ID.S: "The boys asked if we had ever seen anything strange.

In summary

1. What was said?

"I played football yesterday."

2. Change it to the correct past tense.

Sam told Anne he had played football...

3. Who said what? (pronouns)

He told her he had played...

4. Use the time/place word correctly.
