Direct speech: 

When you hear it directly from the person involved.

"I am going to watch a movie."

 

Reported speech: 

When someone tells you what another person has said/done. 

"He said he was going to watch a movie."

Reported speech

In reported speech your verbs take one step back in time

Present simple > Past simple

I like my dog > Joost said he liked his dog.

I have to go to school. > Joost said he had to go to school.

Transform this sentence into
Reported speech: "I like to eat ice cream"

Present continuous > Past continuous

I am playing with my dog. > Joost said he was playing with his dog.

I am doing my homework. > Joost said he was doing his homework.

Transform this sentence into
Reported speech: "I am watching a movie."

Past simple > Past Perfect

I liked my dog. > Joost said he had liked his dog.

I had to go to school yesterday. > Joost said he'd had to go to school yesterday.

Transform this sentence into
Reported speech: "I never liked that book"

Present perfect > Past perfect

I have lost my keys. > Joost said he had lost his keys.

I have played football for three years. > Joost said he had played football for three years.

Transform this sentence into

Can > Could

I can sing. > Joost said he could sing.

I can help you with your homework. > Joost said he could help you with your homework.

Transform this sentence into
Reported speech: "I can speak English."

Will > Would

I will go to the store tomorrow. > Joost said he would go to the store tomorrow.

I will clean my room. > Joost said he would clean his room.
