Subject pronouns
Subject pronouns are words we use instead of someone's name when we are talking about them doing something.

"She loves ice cream"
In this sentence, "she" is a subject pronoun. It's used to replace the name of the person who loves ice cream. Instead of saying "Maria loves ice cream", we can use the pronoun "she" to make the sentence shorter and easier to say.

Subject pronouns are used as the subject of a sentence, while object pronouns are used as the object of a sentence. Here are some tips to help you differentiate between subject and object pronouns in English:

  • Subject pronouns come before the verb in a sentence, while object pronouns come after the verb
Example: "She likes pizza." (subject pronoun "she" comes before the verb "likes") vs. "He gave her a present." (object pronoun "her" comes after the verb "gave")
  • Subject pronouns are used to identify who is doing the action, while object pronouns are used to identify who is receiving the action
Example: "I saw him." (subject pronoun "I" is doing the action of seeing, object pronoun "him" is receiving the action of being seen)

  • Subject pronouns are used to start a sentence, while object pronouns are used after prepositions (such as "to", "for", "with", "on", etc.).
Example: "She is going to the store." (subject pronoun "she" starts the sentence) vs. "He is playing with me." (object pronoun "me" comes after the preposition "with")
  • Object pronouns are often used to replace nouns in a sentence, while subject pronouns usually stand in for the name of a person or thing
Example: "She loves her dog." (the noun "dog" is not replaced by a pronoun) vs. "She loves him." (the noun "him" is replaced by the object pronoun "him")
