Narrative tenses

Narrative = story

Tenses = times you indicate with your verbs

Narrative tenses = tenses that you use to tell a story

Past Simple

We use past simple for actions in the past that are finished now.

For example:

They visited London in 1999.

Past continuous

We use past continuous to talk about an ongoing action that takes place in the past.

For example:

They were playing tennis, when he arrived.

Past continuous

You make the past continuous like this:

was/were + verb + ing

For example: we were going/ he was speaking/I was running

Past perfect

We use past perfect to talk about things that happened before a certain time in the past.

For example:

They had visited London before we went there.

Past perfect

You make the past perfect like this:

had + past participle

For example: we had gone/ he had spoken/I had made

Present Perfect  with "for" and "since"

Present perfect geeft altijd aan dat iets in het verleden begonnen is en nu nog doorgaat of resultaat heeft.  

Present Perfect  with "for" 

Example:

I have lived with him for two years.

"for" geeft een periode aan, bijvoorbeeld "two years", "several days", "many weeks"

Present Perfect  with "since" 

Example:

I have lived with him since 2019.

"since" geeft een bepaald punt in de tijd aan, bijvoorbeeld "January, the 2nd", "Monday"

Past Simple

Gebruik je wanneer er een specifieke tijd wordt genoemd waarin iets is gebeurd (dus geen link naar het heden)

Bijvoorbeeld: They dated in 2020 .

& We met last week .
