How was the First World War fought? 
The western front:

Germany's invasion of Belgium was slowed

France's invasion of Alsace-Lorraine failed

Russia attacked Germany within 10 days

Germany's warmy was now split, and not able to deliver a final blow to France or Russia. 

Both parties dug into defence position, meaning a stalemate, trench warfare.

The eastern front:

Russia's army was very fast and split their army to attack Germany and Austria-Hungary

Germany was succesfull against the Russians in the north with major vicotries. 

Russia was succesfull against Austria-Hungary, with major victories in the south.

Alliance Systems expanded

During the course of the war, multiple countries joined an alliance.

Turkey joined the Triple Alliance in 1914
Italy joined the Triple Entente in 1915
Bulgaria joined the Triple Alliance in 1915
Romania and Portugal joined the Triple Entente in 1916
Greece joined the Triple Entente in 1917

The most significant impact was when the USA entered the war on the side of the Entente.
