Simple present 

Wat? - Tegenwoordige tijd

Hoe? - hele werkwoord / he, she, it werkwoord + s 

Wanneer? - bij gewoontes en bij feiten 

Voorbeelden:

We always take the bus when we go to work.

She often watches TV in the evening. 

Water boils at 100 degrees. 

Simple past 

Wat? - Verleden tijd

Hoe? - werkwoord + ed / onregelmatige werkwoorden 2e rijtje

Wanneer? - bij afgesloten gebeurtenissen in het verleden

Voorbeelden:

We took the bus to school when we were young. 

She watched that movie last night. 

They went on vacation to Greece the summer before.  

Present continuous

Wat? - Tegenwoordige tijd

Hoe? - am/are/is + werkwoord + ing

Wanneer? - iets is nu bezig of aan de gang

Voorbeelden:

Jenny is reading a book over there. 

I am listening to you, just continue your story. 

They are watching that new movie.   

Past continuous

Wat? - Verleden tijd

Hoe? - was/were + werkwoord + ing

Wanneer? - iets was een tijdje in het verleden aan de gang, of iets was bezig en werd onderbroken door iets anders (simple past)

Voorbeelden:

When you called, I was doing my homework. 

Last night at six she was cooking dinner. 

The kids were watching a film, while their dad was reading a book. 

Present perfect 

Wat? - Verleden tijd

Hoe? - have/has + voltooid deelwoord (ww + ed / 3e rijtje) 

Wanneer? - iets is in het verleden begonnen en nog bezig, iets is net gebeurd, iets is in het verleden gebeurd maar niet duidelijk wanneer

Voorbeelden:

She has just entered the building. 

We have lived in London all our lives. 

I have visited Australia. 

Present perfect continuous

Wat? - Verleden tijd

Hoe? - have/has + been + werkwoord + ing

Wanneer? - iets is in het verleden begonnen en nog steeds bezig, nadruk op tijd.

Voorbeelden:

She has been playing piano all afternoon.

I have been waiting for you for an hour! 

We have been doing our homework since this morning.

Past perfect 

Wat? - Verleden tijd

Hoe? - had + voltooid deelwoord

Wanneer? - iets was al afgesloten voordat er iets anders gebeurde (simple past)

Voorbeelden:

They had read the book before they saw the film.

After you had visited him, he left home.

Before they entered the house, they had rung the bell.

Past perfect continuous

Wat? - Verleden tijd

Hoe? - had + been + werkwoord + ing

Wanneer? - iets was langere tijd in het verleden bezig.

Voorbeelden:

They had been sitting there all afternoon. 

When she came to see him, he had been crying for 

half an hour.

Future

Wat? - toekomende tijd

Hoe? - will + ww, am/are/is going to + ww, present continuous, simple present

Wanneer? - iets gaat nog gebeuren

Voorbeelden:

I think I will visit him this afternoon. 

We are going to see that film this weekend.

They are getting married in a month. 

The store opens at 9.
