Wat? - Tegenwoordige tijd

Wanneer? - bij gewoontes en bij feiten 

Voorbeelden:
We always take the bus when we go to work.
She often watches TV in the evening. 
Water boils at 100 degrees.

Wat? - Verleden tijd
Hoe? - werkwoord + ed / onregelmatige werkwoorden 2e rijtje
Wanneer? - bij afgesloten gebeurtenissen in het verleden

Voorbeelden:
We took the bus to school when we were young. 
She watched that movie last night. 
They went on vacation to Greece the summer before.

Wanneer? - iets is nu bezig of aan de gang

Wat? - Verleden tijd
Hoe? - was/were + werkwoord + ing
Wanneer? - iets was een tijdje in het verleden aan de gang, of iets was bezig en werd onderbroken door iets anders (simple past)

Voorbeelden:
When you called, I was doing my homework. 
Last night at six she was cooking dinner. 
The kids were watching a film, while their dad was reading a book.

Wat? - Verleden tijd
Hoe? - have/has + voltooid deelwoord (ww + ed / 3e rijtje) 
Wanneer? - iets is in het verleden begonnen en nog bezig, iets is net gebeurd, iets is in het verleden gebeurd maar niet duidelijk wanneer

Voorbeelden:
She has just entered the building. 
We have lived in London all our lives. 
I have visited Australia.

Wanneer? - iets is in het verleden begonnen en nog steeds bezig, nadruk op tijd.

Voorbeelden:

We have been doing our homework since this morning.
