Past simple

Use the past simple: to express a finished action in the past
I lived in Gorredijk from 1998-2000
As a child I played with barbie dolls.

Form: 3 groups
1. regular verbs
2. was/were
3. irregular verbs

Regular verbs (Group 1)
  • normal rule is verb + ed:  work -> worked
  • verb ends in -e, add +d:    live-> lived
  • verbs of one syllable (1 vowel + 1 consonant), double the consonant: stop -> stopped / plan -> planned
  • BUT if the final consonant is -y or -w, it is not doubled: play -> played
  • most two-syllable verbs the end consonant is doubled if the stress is on the second syllable: prefer -> preferred
  • Verbs that end in a consonant +y, ending changes in -ied: carry -> carried / cry -> cried
