Past Simple
De Past Simple is de Engelse term voor de verleden tijd. 

Je gebruikt deze vorm als je het hebt over:
feiten, gewoonten of dingen die je doet met regelmaat  
die in het verleden gebeurd zijn en nu helemaal klaar zijn.

Past Continuous
De Past Continuous is de duurvorm in de verleden tijd.  

Je gebruikt deze vorm als je wil zeggen dat:
iets op een bepaald moment in het verleden
  een tijd(je) aan de gang was.

was/were & werkwoord +ing

when, while

Voor de past simple zijn het vaak tijdsbepalingen
 uit het verleden: yesterday, last week, last year, 1997, 
2 days ago etc.

Past continuous vs. past simple
Je gebruikt de past continuous i.c.m. de past simple om aan te geven dat er iets gebeurde (korte actie = past simple) terwijl er al iets aan de gang was (lange actie = past continuous).

I was washing my car when the accident happened

Past Simple



When to use?
When referring to:

An action that started in the past and continued up to another point in the past.

How to form?
Affirmative sentence:
Had + been + verb+ing

Negation:
Had + not + been + verb+ing

Question:
had + subject + been + verb+ing
You had been waiting there for more than two hours when she finally arrived.
Had you been waiting there for more than two hours when she finally arrived?
You had not been waiting there for more than two hours when she finally arrived.
Example:
The fire had been raging for almost four days.

Past perfect continuous
Martha had been baking for hours when the children came home. 

We had been doing our homework, because we wanted to present this in class.
We had done our homework, because we wanted to present this in class.

1- What is the state of action?
Use the past simple
( adding -ed or irregular verb)

2- What is the background information?
Use the past continuous (was +ing)

3- What happened earlier in the past (so before this action or until this action)
Use the past perfect ( had + volt. deelw) or the past perfect continuous ( had been + -ing)

Past tense
1- The girls met a young backpacker in a restaurant.
= Past simple 

2- The boy was travelling on his own.
= Past continuous 

3- The girls had never seen the boy before, until they met him in the restaurant.
= Past perfect (had + voltooid deelwoord)

3- The boy had been travelling on his own for weeks so now he needed some company.
= Past perfect continuous (had been + -ing)
