Prepositions 

Wanneer gebruik je de voorzetsels van beweging?

Prepositions of directions geven aan dat je in de richting van iets beweegt of dat je ergens vandaan beweegt.

On (op, bovenop)

"On" gebruik je bij oppervlaktes

She is cycling on the road

The cat is sitting on the table

"On" gebruik je bij openbaar vervoer

Kelly is on the bus

I'm on the train to Amsterdam

In (in)

"In" gebruik je bij wegen

I live in Oxford street

"In" gebruik je bij landen

My aunt lives in Australia

"In" gebruik je binnen andere grote gebieden

The hospital is in the east part of the town

"In" gebruik je bij afgesloten ruimtes

My rabbit is in its cage

At (op)

"At" gebruik je bij huisnummer

He lives at number 7

"At" gebruik je bij gebouwen of namen van gebouwen

We are at school

My brother is at the British museum

At, in, on (voorzetsels van tijd)

Deze voorzetsels kunnen ook gebruikt worden om aan te geven wanneer iets gebeurt.

"On" gebruik je dan bij: dagen en data

"In" gebruik je dan bij: maanden, jaartallen, seizoenen en dagdelen

"At" gebruik je dan bij:  tijdsaanduidingen

Over/above 

Je gebruikt deze voorzetsels om te zeggen dat iets "boven of hoger dan iets of iemand anders" is. 

The plane was flying above/over the clouds

Jo raised her arms above/over her head

Als iets bedekt is of als er een beweging is dan kun je alleen "over" gebruiken

He wore a raincoat over his suit

He threw the ball over the fence

Under/below (onder)

"Under" gebruik je bij een plek direct onder iets

She wore a T-shirt under her jacket

"Under" gebruik je ook als er iets of iemand bedekt is

You can still see the graffiti under the paint

Nadia found a wallet under a pile of leaves

"Below" gebruik je als je het over iets hebt wat op een lager niveau is, maar niet direct onder iets anders. 

A boxer  may not hit below the belt

The sun disappeared below the horizon

Between/among (tussen)

"Between" gebruik je bij tweetallen

Dad parked the car between two lorries

"Among" gebruik je bij groepen groter dan twee

Simon lived among gorillas for years

Liz is very popular among her friends

Overige veelgebruikte prepositions of direction:

The shop is across the street (tegenover, aan de overkant van).

My bike is behind the station (achter).

The school is close to the church (dichtbij, vlakbij)

I'm standing in front of the station (voor)

The school is near the church (dichtbij, vlakbij)

He lives next to a museum (naast)

I had to go outside the classroom (buiten)

The school is within walking distance (binnen)

Overige veelgebruikte prepositions of direction:

We have a garden at the back of the house. (achter)

Joe lives opposite Mary. (tegenover)

Ravi lives across the road. (aan de overkant)

Wish I lived by the sea (bij)
