SpeakOut lesson 1d: Lifestyle

In this lesson, Ss watch a video of interviews with people on the street about how they would describe

their lifestyle. They begin by selecting words to describe their own lifestyle before they watch the interviews and complete a set of viewing tasks. There’s a focus on modifiers such as quite/fairly, before Ss interview a partner about their lifestyle and then write a blog post about a day in their life.

Which of the following words would you use to describe your lifestyle? Choose 3 words from the list:

Watch the interviews. 

Note down:

1. some of the words the speakers use to describe their lifestyles.

2. some of the things they want to change in their lives.

Q1: How would you describe your lifestyle?

Q2: Is there anything you would like to change about your lifestyle?

Write about:

1. What time you usually get up.

2. What you do first in the morning.

3. How you travel to work or college.

4. What you have for lunch.

5. What you enjoy doing in the evenings.

Modifiers

We use modifiers to talk about how much, or how little, something is true.

Modifiers

quite, quite a/an  ---------------  is less strong than 'very'

 Modifiers with similar meaning:

relatively, fairly, pretty, reasonably.

Example:

"I would describe my life as quite normal."

"That's quite a difficult language to learn."

Modifiers

A bit more/less --------------- small amount or less.

 A lot more/less --------------- large amount or less.

Example:

I'd like to travel a bit more.

She'd like to spend a lot less.
