How to use a dictionary.

1. Decide whether you really NEED to look up the word. Maybe a guessing strategy is enough.
2.  Look at the first letter, then the second, then the third, etc,  to look up the word. The dictionary is in alphabetical order. 
3. Make use of guide words.

Op de volgende drie slides zie je Engelse zinnen. Het dikgedrukte woord uit de zin staat niet in die hoedanigheid (die spelling) in het woordenboek. Waarom niet? Wat is er anders?

• Werkwoorden staan enkel als stam in het woordenboek
  
• Ga dus altijd terug naar de stam van het werkwoord als je het op wilt zoeken in het woordenboek!

• Het gaat hier om een meervoudsvorm (PLURAL)
  
• Zelfstandig naamwoorden (NOUN) staan enkel als stam in het woordenboek. 
• Ga dus altijd terug naar de stam van het werkwoord als je het op wilt zoeken in het woordenboek!
• In dit geval ''car''

Waarom staat het dikgedrukte woord niet met deze spelling in het woordenboek:

• Het gaat hier om een overtreffende trap (SUPERLATIVE)
  
• Vergrotende en overtreffende trappen staan enkel als stam in het woordenboek.
• Ga dus altijd terug naar de stam van het bijvoeglijk naamwoord (ADJECTIVE) als je het op wilt zoeken in je woordenboek! (In dit geval ''friendly'')

Prepositions

De betekenis van een werkwoord kan veranderen als je er een ander voorzetsel bij zet.

Zie het werkwoord 'wait' en het verschil tussen 'wait on' en 'wait for'

Hoe zit het met Engelse uitdrukkingen?

Naar welk woord zoek je in het woordenboek?

Probeer zo weinig mogelijk het woordenboek te gebruiken. Gebruik eerst guessing strategies. 

Maar zorg dat je weet hoe het werkt zodat je hem snel kan gebruiken als het nodig is.
