Goals:

At the end of the lesson you can:

- Apply skimming and scanning to get a foundation for answering questions.

- Apply word association to as a reading/listening technique

Warm-up

- I say a word

- I throw a tennis ball at someone

- You say the first word that comes to mind related to my word

- You throw the tennis ball at someone else

- They do the same

- repeat

- Example: dinner - dessert - chocolate - brown - etc

How to look at a text

- look at the text

- How would you begin?

Let students answer the question. no wrong answers. 

Skimming

- pictures

- headlines

- some words from first/last line of paragraph

why do we do this? to get a feel of what the text is about, who is in it, where you can find certain information. This is a skill, first you actively do it, at some point it will only take 5 seconds. 

- do this on the text you have. whats the picture about? etc.

Scanning

- After reading the question

- Ask yourself whats the subject?

- Look for a particular section

- look for particular words

- word association

Word association

"I am always on the lookout for ways to earn a little extra money and I was looking for something I could do from home"

This person wants... 

- Job with variety

- Make money quickly

- Work at her own place

Practise word association. Similar words, words that come to mind, opposites, etc.

Vaak staan woorden uit de vraag anders in de tekst, als je van tevoren al weet welke woorden er bij de belangrijkste info horen, prime je je hersenen al om er op te letten.

Dinner

Zo veel mogelijk woorden, ga eindeloos door.

Alles kan, synoniemen, woorden die ermee te maken hebben etc.
