Goal: At the end of class you know what you can do to guess the meaning of a word in the text. 

Warming up: word list

1. Find the words of the next page in your wordlist.

2. Make example sentences using at least 2 of the words in one sentence. 

3. Make them meaningful!

4. Make a note of your example sentence on your Ipad (notes)

You only have to keep them for this lesson. 

Warming up, words:

What do you do, if you don't know a word?

Strategies for word guessing

Examples: 

- from context

- recognise part of the word

- looks like a Dutch word

Let's see: 

From context

- Theoretisch: That shabby building at the end of the street should be taken down. It's almost falling apart. 

- Havo: That corner is dangerous for pedestrians. It's well-known place for accidents. The shrubs hide anyone that's crossing. 

- Vwo: This is my least favourite part of the city. It's so dreary with all the run-down houses and dying trees. 

Recognise part of the word

Theoretisch: I love your house, it's so spacious. 

Havo: We should really go and check out all the famous landmarks of Paris. 

Vwo: I live in the outskirts of Manhatten. 

Looks like Dutch

Theoretisch: My friend always has to travel to the city to go to a mosque. 

Havo: The local facilities in this town are amazing. 

Vwo: Denmark is known for its picturesque fishermen's villages, with coloured houses.
