Algorithms and personal recommendations
You often see recommendations on the internet, for example when you order something online or watch videos on a streaming platform.

These personal recommendations are compiled by algorithms.

In order to make a suggestion that really suits you, the algorithm needs a lot of information (data).

The recommendations an algorithm makes are based on your:
search history
(what have you searched for on the internet in the past?)
surfing behaviour
(how much time do you spend on specific websites?)
profile
(gender, age group and interests)
popularity
(what do people with similar profiles like?)

What is a filter bubble?

Slide 11 - Carte mentale

Filter Bubble
A filter bubble is the result of information an algorithm collects about your previous online searches: if you often search for articles about the positive effects of veganism on the environment, it will get more difficult to find information that states the opposite. Other perspectives, opinions and critical articles are ‘filtered out’, thus creating a filter bubble.
