Why is it so cold in Russia?

Three reasons for a cold climate

1. Russia lies very far North. Where there is very little heat, especially in the winter. 

2. Russia is a large land mass, far away from the ocean. Low influences from the sea. = cold.

3. High mountain range in the south + east > blocks tropical warm air. 

Soil in Russia

Soil = Top layer of the earth (+/- first meter) 
- Climate has a big influence on the soil.

Why is soil importent? 
- It is essential for plant growth.

North of Russia:

Podzol 

Very sandy and therefore unfertile soil.

Climate = Low evaporation
+ high percipitation

South of Russia:

Chernozem/Black Earth: 

soil type suitable for agriculture

Climate = more balans between
evaporation and percipitacion
