Getting rid of the Treaty

  • Hitler wants to get rid of the Treaty of Versailles. But he doesn't know how foreign countries will react...
  • But in what ways does he break the Treaty?

1. Military draft (1935)

  • Hitler brings back the military conscription. The army grows and the new weapons factories make the military stronger than ever before.
  • Foreign reaction? France, England en Russia object, but they don't intervene...

2. Remilitarisation (1936)

  • The Treaty of Versailles and the Treaty of Locarno forbid Hitler from sending soldiers to the Rhineland. He does it anyway however...
  • France and England object again, but do nothing.

3. Anschluss (1938)
  • Many people in Austria (those who spoke German) felt connected to Germany. They had been allies in WW1 after all.
  • The Nazi Party in Austria even tries to convince people to join Germany.
  • With little resistance ''the Anschluss'' was a fact.
