My father ______ (to work) at a hospital until 1998.

Slide 6 - Question ouverte

Past Simple
  • He went to Rotterdam yesterday.
  • Aram saw a good movie last night.
  • My father worked at a hospital until 1998.

All of these sentences are positive / affirmative.
In this lesson, we're going to learn how to make questions and negatives in the past simple.

Slide 7 - Diapositive

Rewrite this as a question:
He went to Rotterdam yesterday.

Slide 8 - Question ouverte

Questions in the past simple
He went to Rotterdam yesterday. > Did he go to Rotterdam yesterday?

  • Rule 1: You start with Did, followed by the subject (he/she/Laura/The doctor/My friend/etc.)
  • After the subject, you get the main verb (go, run, play, see, dance, laugh, work, etc.). Do NOT use the past simple form.

Slide 9 - Diapositive

Rewrite as a question:
Aram saw a good movie last night.

Slide 10 - Question ouverte

Rewrite as question:
My father worked at a hospital.

Slide 11 - Question ouverte

Some exceptions:
When the verb is to be or could, you don't use Did...
  • Samar was in Iran last week. > Was Samar in Iran last week?
  • They were very kind. > Were they very kind?
  • Dembe could speak four languages. > Could Dembe speak four languages?

Slide 12 - Diapositive

Negatives
  •     He went to Rotterdam yesterday.
  •     Aram saw a good movie last night.
  •     My father worked at a hospital until 1998.

What do we have to write when we want to say that these things are not true? In that case, we have to use the negative (ontkennende) form.

Slide 13 - Diapositive

Make negative: He went to Rotterdam yesterday.

Slide 14 - Question ouverte

Negatives in the past simple
He went to R'dam yesterday. >  He didn't go to R'dam yesterday.

Rule 1: you say didn't after the subject
Rule 2: didn't is followed by the main verb (go, see, dance, play)
-> He didn't went is therefore wrong!

Slide 15 - Diapositive

Make negative:
Aram saw a good movie last night.

Slide 16 - Question ouverte

Make negative:
My father worked at a hospital.

Slide 17 - Question ouverte

Same exceptions:
When the verb is to be or could, you don't use didn't
  • She was very smart. > She wasn't very smart.
  • My neighbours were old. > My neighbours weren't old.
  • Peter could play guitar. > Peter couldn't play guitar.
