Comparisons - er/est
To form comparatives, we mostly do the same thing as we do in Dutch. Most short words gain  gain –er or–est at the end 
Cheap - cheaper - cheapest

  • Words with 1 syllable (lettergreep)
  • Words with 2 syllables that end in –y (happy), -er, (clever), 
–le (gentle) and –ow (narrow) .

Bigger / thinner 
Words that end in a short vowel + consonant (klinker + medeklinker), double the last consonant


Big - bigger - biggest
Thin - thinner - thinnest

Comparisons
Words with 2 syllables that do not end in  –y, -er, -le or –ow or words that are longer, do not gain –er/-est  but instead use more/most & less/least .

Interesting - more interesting - most interesting
Beautiful - less beautiful - least beautiful
