But where does Thanksgiving come from?

The story.....

- Pilgrims came to Plymouth in 1620 to seek religious freedom

- Ship Mayflower 

- Wampanoag tribe helped them

- Things improved > time for a feast!

- Whole group + Wanpanoag celebrated for 3 days

- What a nice day to celebrate! Right?

Thanksgiving started with a feast in 1621 when English Pilgrims and Native Americans came together to celebrate a successful harvest in Plymouth, Massachusetts. The Pilgrims, who had settled in the New World seeking religious freedom, faced a challenging first winter. The Native Americans, particularly the Wampanoag tribe, helped them learn essential farming and survival skills.

In the fall of 1621, after a good harvest, the Pilgrims organized a three-day feast to give thanks for their blessings and to express gratitude to the Native Americans who had assisted them. This event is often considered the origin of the Thanksgiving holiday.

Over time, Thanksgiving became an annual tradition in the United States, celebrated on the fourth Thursday of November. It evolved into a day for people to come together with family and friends, share a special meal, and express gratitude for the positive aspects of their lives.

Present simple

Je gebruikt de present simple om te zeggen dat iets:

Vaak staat er bij de present simple een woord in de zin als:

always, often, never, sometimes, usually (gewoonlijk), frequently (vaak), every day, every week, ...

I charge my smartphone every evening.

The sun always rises in the east.

Present continuous

Je gebruikt de present continuous om aan te geven dat iets nu aan de gang is. In het Nederlands gebruik je dan vaak ‘zit te’, ‘sta te’, ‘aan het …’.

Bij zinnen met woorden als:

always, often, never, sometimes, usually, frequently, every, …

(of als je zo’n woord erbij kunt bedenken in de zin)

Ergens van balen

De present continuous gebruik je ook om irritatie uit te drukken, meestal in combinatie met always:

 

My uncle is always complaining about the weather!

They are constantly using my smartphone!
