The Past Perfect
The Past Perfect is used to ‘go back’ for a moment when we are already talking about the past. It is used to make it clear that something had already happened at the time we are talking about 
This is the past before the past.

When I arrived, Lucy had already gone home

Had + Past participle (voltooid deelwoord)

I had forgotten to do it, but then I remembered.

We don’t use the Past Perfect to simply refer to the past. For that we use the Past Simple or the Present Perfect

I walked home yesterday
I have been to Greece twice.
