  • To be, to have
  • Modals:
  •  can/could (have)/be able to
  • be allowed/may/might (have)
  • must/have (got) to/should
  • want/make/would like/mind/willing

  •   I can help her/I could help her
  • I am able to help her/I was able to help her
  •  I have/had been able to help her
  •  It can be cold here/It could rain this afternoon

  • What he says may be true/He might be at home = Might is less sure

Modals: Obligation/Order
  •  I must help her/I have (got) to help her -> Have (got) is possible in all tenses
  • Verbod: You must not steal
  • Niet hoeven: don't have to/needn't
  • Must can also indicate a logical result: You must be very ill
  • Eigenlijk moeten: Should

  •  He wants us to make our homework
  • He always makes us work hard in class
  • I would like you to come, too.
  • I don't mind helping you
  • Are they willing to pay for the damage?
  • Liever: Would rather + hele werkwoord
  • I would rather go to bed.

Modals: Complicated?
  •  A lot of people find this difficult, and you might make a lot of mistakes in the exercises.
  • For the test it is important that you know which one to use
  • But in real life it is not that strict
  • I have to go to bed vs. I must go to bed? Not that much of a difference.
  • Tip: Use your reference book with the exercises!
