Past continuous:  Use

• for actions happening at a particular time in the past.
• to set the scene in a story.
• for two or more actions happening at the same time in the past.
  

You use the past continuous for actions happening at a particular time in the past.

The math teacher was giving a test.

The principal was sitting in his office.

The coach was playing basketball.

The gardener was cutting bushes.

How do you make the past contiuous: by placing was or were BEFORE the verb and placing –ing AFTER the verb.

Past continuous + Past Simple

Als je ergens mee bezig was in de verleden tijd en iets anders gebeurt er tussendoor.

Usually you use while in the sentence.
