Baggage Tracing

Baggage Tracing is the department of a Handling Company or Airline where pax go to when their suitcase is damaged or left behind somewhere or missing.

FIBAG en LABAG

The airport registers when the first baggage is being offloaded by the baggage personnel. 

The baggage employee pushes the button 'FIBAG' (first baggage) when the first baggage is put on the conveyor belt.

The baggage employee pushes the button 'LABAG' (last baggage) when the last baggage is put on the conveyor belt.

What can happen to luggage?

1. Baggage doesn't arrive on the conveyor belt
2. Baggage arrives damaged
3. Baggage is not being claimed by a pap

When the screens indicate that all baggage has been unloaded and a passenger's baggage has not arrived, that passenger must report to the baggage tracing department of the baggage handler of the company with which the passenger arrived.

A PIR or Property Irregularity Report is entered here. You can find this in your reader. In this case, the AHL or Advise if Hold file section is completed.

How to fill out a missing luggage report

At KLM, this is done via BagAssist. A program that is linked to Worldtracer, a worldwide system in which loss and damage reports are processed.

You will be guided through this system in the following slides. Pay close attention to the abbreviations used.

Meneer Patel his suitcase of 20 kgs is missing. 

The details that are filled out are TN (Tagnummer), CT (Color and Type Code).

BI (Brand Information), CL (Combination Lock), KK (Keys Kept)

Uitleg

CT De die code staat voor de type en kleur van de koffer

BI Het merk van de koffer is in dit geval Samsonite

CL De combinatie van het combinatieslotje dat aan de koffer hangt

KK Heeft de koffer een sleutel? (Y voor yes N voor No)

Sleep naar ieder sleepdoel 2 kaartjes (1x zwart 1x wit)

You are now familiar with a number of terms around Baggage Tracing.

Can you deduce what the codes mean?

Consult Annex XI and note the meaning of as many abbreviations as possible.

You can use the PIR as an aid.

Baggage Identification

The code on the baggage tag is used to identify baggage. In addition, a description of the baggage must be given.

This is done by means of codes that can be found in the Baggage Identification Chart. You can see an image of this on the next slid

2. Baggage arrives damaged

When baggage is damaged there will be made a DPR, or a Damaged Property Report.

Another word for this file is Damage and Pilferage Report.

The DPR is part of the PIR.

This is the system that is being used by KLM to file and search reports in Worldtracer.

Are you able to find the Tag number? What about the Color and Type code?

What was the weight of the suitcase?

SIDE/TORN/MINOR is shown at damaged. 

The passenger can claim the cost at his own insurance using this report. In some cases an amount of money is being transfered to the owner or the owner could receive a new suitcase.

 

3. Baggage remains unclaimed

This type of baggage we call On Hand Luggage. 

On hand luggage

A passenger always needs to claim his baggage himself. When baggage is not being claimed by the owner, the suitcase will be opened to check of there are any perishables inside. 

Door 16

The only entrance from landside directly to the baggage hall is called door 16.

This door is located between arrivals hall 2 and 3.

Expedite Baggage

Expedite baggage is the only baggage that can be loaded on an aircraft when the passenger him-/herself is not on board of the aircraft. 

A rush label is being used for this baggage.
