Past Continuous
De Past Continuous is de duurvorm in de verleden tijd.  Je gebruikt deze vorm als je wil zeggen dat 

iets op een bepaald moment in het verleden een tijd(je) aan de gang was

was/were & werkwoord +ing

Past Simple               = ww+ed / 2e vorm
                                        = in het verleden gebeurd & afgelopen
                                        = yesterday, last week, in 1990, two days ago

Past Continuous     = was/were  + ww ing
                                        = langere tijd bezig in het verleden 
                                        = when, while

Past continuous: When / while

When / While ==> gebruik je als een lange actie wordt onderbroken door een korte actie.

  • While I was making a birthday cake, I poured a glass of salt instead of sugar into it.
  • John was playing the guitar when Linda came in.

Past Continuous (was/were + ww ing) = al aan de gang ( lang)
Past Simple (ww ed / 2e vorm) = iets gebeurde (kort)
