Pluralism

The next unit that we are going to explore and examine is about pluralism. So what is pluralism?

 It is a political philosophy that people of different beliefs, backgrounds and lifestyles can co-exist in the same society and participate equally in the political process. 

Before we begin to examine pluralism, we need to step back....

Define culture

What makes the Dutch Dutch?

Functions of Culture:

defines part of your identity

share a frame of reference

regulates behavior

Dominant Cultures & Subcultures: define one of each you know of at school &  in our society

Dominant culture: basic rules of behavior as well as norms and values that everyone agrees on. 

Mainly people who have a lot of political and economic influence that put their stamp on the culture of society. 

Think of an example!

Subculture

If a specific group develops values, norms and other characteristics that deviate from the dominant culture, we call this a subculture. 

Culture Transfer

Socialization: the process by which someone consciously or subconsciously is taught the values, norms and other cultural features of their group. 

Social Control: which is the way to encourage, or even force others to comply with the prevailing norms. 

Teach new comers
to be Dutch

Creating Loyalty

Research (Bell Derks) shows that if we force immigrants to cut the bonds with their backgrounds and identity, they will become less loyal.  "People with dual nationality will work harder for their new country, if their immigrant background is accepted and respected by the indigenous population." 

Identify a positive role model in The Netherlands for this idea.
