Three phases

Water and many other substances can exist

in different phases, what were these phases called?

• As a solid substance - ice

•  As a liquid - water

• As a gas - water vapour

We are not able to see molecules and the way they move

But we are able to use the particle model to describe how molecules move depending on what phase the substance is in

How are we able to measure the temperature?

You need to be able to describe how a liquid themometer works

What happens inside the thermometer when

the temperature increases?

And what happens when the temperatures 

decreases again?

These thermometers use smaller scales

to measure the temperature

Phase changes

Substances can change depending on the temperature

This is known as a phase change

You need to be able to name and describe these 6 phase changes

When it is really cold outside, the water vapour in the air turns into frost on leaves and tree branches

After a candle has been blown out, the melted wax will turn into solid wax over some time.

When it is cold outside and you breathe against the window, it starts to fog up
