Schedule for this lesson
Recapping paragraph 1-4 of chapter 3

Slide 2 - Diapositive

Learning objectives
You know what to learn for the test

The questions you have/had are answered

Slide 3 - Diapositive

Three phases
Water and many other substances can exist
in different phases, what were these phases called?

  • As a solid substance - ice

  •  As a liquid - water

  • As a gas - water vapour

Slide 4 - Diapositive

Phases in the particle model
We are not able to see molecules and the way they move

But we are able to use the particle model to describe how molecules move depending on what phase the substance is in

Slide 5 - Diapositive

Describe how molecules move in a solid substance using the particle model

Slide 7 - Diapositive

How are we able to measure the temperature?

Slide 8 - Question ouverte

Thermometers and temperature
You need to be able to describe how a liquid themometer works

What happens inside the thermometer when
the temperature increases?

And what happens when the temperatures
decreases again?

Slide 9 - Diapositive

Thermometers and temperature
We also have digital themometers

These thermometers use smaller scales
to measure the temperature

Slide 10 - Diapositive

Phase changes
Substances can change depending on the temperature

This is known as a phase change

Slide 11 - Diapositive

Phase changes
You need to be able to name and describe these 6 phase changes

Slide 12 - Diapositive

When it is really cold outside, the water vapour in the air turns into frost on leaves and tree branches
(which phase change is this)

Slide 13 - Question ouverte

After a candle has been blown out, the melted wax will turn into solid wax over some time.
(which phase change is this)

Slide 14 - Question ouverte

When it is cold outside and you breathe against the window, it starts to fog up
(which phase change is this)

Slide 15 - Question ouverte

Phase changes
You also need to be able to describe how to molecules move when changing phases

Slide 16 - Diapositive

Boiling and melting point
When you boil water, the water throughout the whole pot or pan you are boiling it in will start to evaporate

Slide 17 - Diapositive

Boiling and melting point
Water and other substances have their own boiling and melting points

You need to be able to
read these kinds of
tables

Slide 18 - Diapositive

Boiling and melting point
The temperature is -110 degrees celsius
Which substance(s) is (are) still in a liquid form?
