why do so many countries in the world have English as their first language?
The British colonised large parts of the world between 1600 and 1918, in order to become the most powerful (and rich) empire in the world.
Most of those countries are independent now (USA, Canada, India, South-Africa, Nigeria etc.)
But still, English is their first language (and sometimes they still drive in the left lane..)
King Charles is still the official Head of State in 14 independent "Common Wealth" countries (like Canada, Australia, the Bahamas, Jamaica etc.)

assignment: presentation
Form groups of 4 and work together.
Pick a card. On each card you will find 1 English speaking country.
Find as much information as you can about this country:
Capital city? Currency? Largest airport? What other languages are spoken here? What are the main religions? What are the people known for (stereotypes)? Eating habits/typical food? What are the cultural customs (music/films/holidays/ famous people)?
Add your information in a creative way to present to the class and be sure every group member joins in the presentation! Good luck! The presentation will be in class next week.
