How?      Was / were + verb (-ing)
                 Was = I, she, he, it
                 Were = you, we, they

Continuous form = focus on duration/ process
Simple form = focus on result

= Past simple interrupts the past continuous.

Ex: I was cycling home when I fell off my bike

The shorter action (past simple) interrupts the longer action (past continuous).
