The Future Tenses

Will/Shall - be going to

niet erg zeker: een spontane opwelling of een voorspelling zonder bewijs

redelijk zeker: een plan of voornemen, of een voorspelling waar bewijs voor is

Will/Shall + Infinitive

Used for:

• Predictions (without proof): I think they will win the game.
• Promises: I will always love you.
• Offers (in questions: shall): I'll help you carry your bags.
• Decisions/announcements: The Summer Olympics will take place in August 2021.

Be Going To

to be (am, is, are) + going to + infinitive

• To describe an intention: I'm going to keep a diary
• To talk about a future plan: We are both going to study in the USA next summer.
• To make a prediction about the future based on evidence: Look at those clouds. It's going to rain.

• Future events that are fixed, planned or definitely decided:

I am visiting my grandparents tomorrow.

Next month we are emigrating to Australia.

I ...... (meet) my friends in the park in an hour.
