Past simple & past continuous
When do we use the past simple?

When something started and also ended in the past. Can be recognized by the words:
Yesterday
Last week
Last month
For example:
He played tennis last week.
She sang at my brother's wedding last year.



Present simple & present continuous
  • When do we use the present simple?
  • We use the present simple when we are talking about facts, habits, or routines. For example:
  1. Fact: Water freezes at zero degrees.
  2. Habit: He drinks tea at breakfast.
  3. Routine: He catches the bus every morning.

  • When you have she/he/it in the sentence, you get verb (werkwoord) + s. (work becomes works)

  • When it is I/you/they, it is just the verb. (just work)

  • Only with he/she/it, the verb (werkwoord) changes. You have to add an S. (Works, sleeps, runs)


  • When do we use the present continuous?
  • We use the present continuous when something is happening now. You can look for words like:
  1. At the moment
  2. Now
  3. Right now

  • For example:
  • I am looking at my laptop right now.
  • She is working at the moment.

  • How do we use the present continuous?

  • With the present continuous we use to be + werkwoord + ing.

What information do you get from the 2 sentences. What is the most important in both sentences?​
I made a cake > I made it. Focus on that.​
The cake was made by me > Focus on the cake.

When do we use the past simple?

When something started and also ended in the past. Can be recognized by the words:
Yesterday
Last week
Last month
For example:
He played tennis last week.
She sang at my brother's wedding last year.

  • When something started and also ended in the past. Can be recognized by the words:
  1. Yesterday
  2. Last week
  3. Last month

  • For example:
  • He played tennis last week.
  • She sang at my brother's wedding last year.

  • How do we use the past simple?
  • With regelmatige werkwoorden it is werkwoord + ed (walk becomes walked).

  • With onregelmatige werkwoorden the word changes (Buy = Bought, Sing = Sang).
  • When do we use the past continuous?
  • To say that something was going on. Can also happen during something else.

  • For example:
  1. I was watching TV when she called.
  2. The other part of the sentence is written in the past simple.

  • How do we use the past continuous?
  • When you have I/he/she/it, you use was + werkwoord + ing
  • With You/we/they, you use were + werkwoord + ing

Past simple & past continuous
When do we use the past simple?

When something started and also ended in the past. Can be recognized by the words:
Yesterday
Last week
Last month
For example:
He played tennis last week.
She sang at my brother's wedding last year.



Present perfect & past perfect
  • When do we use the present perfect?
  • When something happened in the past but you don't know when or when something started in the past and it is still going on.

  • For example:
  1. He has caught the ball.
  2. She has lived there for 3 years.

  • How do we use the present perfect?
  • When you have he/she/it, you use has + voltooid deelwoord.
  • With I/you/we/they, you use have + voltooid deelwoord.
  • With onregelmatige werkwoorden the word changes (Catch-Caught-Caught). 



  • When do we use the past perfect?
  • You use the past perfect to discuss multiple things from the past. The past perfect is used for the event the furthest away.

  • For example:
  1. I had defeated my friend Jimmy, before his parent arrived.
  2. The other part of the sentence is written in the past simple (arrived).

  • How do we use the past perfect?
  • When you have a regelmatig werkwoord you use had + voltooid deelwoord + ed.
  • With onregelmatige werkwoorden the word changes (See - Saw - Seen).
