Move the blue numbers- Establishing a Spanish Colony in Florida
In 1564, France established Fort Caroline near where Ponce de Léon had originally landed.
It was difficult to establish a colony in Florida because European crops wouldn't grow, there was extreme heat, tropical storms, and dangerous animals.
This angered the Spanish king, and he sent Menéndez de Avilés to build and rule a Spanish settlement and destroy the French colony.
Ponce de Léon discovered Florida and claimed the land for Spain.
Florida was, therefore, ignored for many years.
